Hubbard Hospice House
& Hubbard House West

The Elizabeth Hubbard Hospice House is a spacious 24-bedroom facility perched on a mountaintop high above Charleston, built with all the comforts of home in mind. Large, private rooms surround attractive family sitting areas. Each room has its own bathroom and comfortable seating for patients and families. Family rooms and two fully equipped kitchens allow families to stay with their loved ones and to feel at home. Two of the rooms also have been decorated and equipped to meet the needs of terminally ill pediatric patients in our community.

Hubbard House West, our new 10-bedroom inpatient facility, opened in August 2011 on the first floor of Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston. The unit is an extension of the orginal Hubbard House and also was designed and built with all the comforts of home, including a large kitchen and family room with children's play room, and other more private sitting areas. The unit is located behind the new main building at Thomas Hospital, at the corner of Poplar and Ohio Streets, which is helpful to families who reside in the western region of our service area, saving them more than 20 miles round trip from the other house.

As well as enjoying the comforts of home at both facilities, patients receive specialized medical and nursing care to relieve the symptoms of their illness, such as pain and breathlessness. HospiceCare nurses and specially trained certified nursing assistants care for patients around the clock. A HospiceCare physician visits regularly and is on call 24 hours a day. Social workers, counselors, chaplains and volunteers are also available to make patients and families as comfortable as possible.

The Hubbard Hospice House and Hubbard House West serves hospice patients who:

  • Require more intensive, skilled medical care than can be provided in their home or place of residence.
  • Require respite care to give their family a short rest from providing care at home.
  • Do not have a caregiver in the home or can no longer safely live alone.
