Kids Path is a model of care for seriously ill and grieving children. The primary goal of the program is to help
seriously ill children and their families live as normally as possible.
Kids Path services include palliative care for children from birth to age 18 with progressive, potentially
life-threatening illnesses from the time of diagnosis through the course of the illness. Children who are receiving
aggressive, curative treatment benefit from the interdisciplinary approach hospice care providers are known for,
without the restriction of a six-month prognosis, required in order to qualify for general hospice care. Like hospice
care, Kids Path care embraces the patient as a whole -- body, mind and spirit.
Kids Path providers also offer counseling support. Age-appropriate counseling is available for children and youth
grieving from a loss or coping with a family illness.
The Kids Path interdisciplinary team works in tandem with the child’s physician to address physical, emotional and
spiritual issues. Depending on the needs of the child and their family, the following team members may provide
services to the child: registered nurse; children’s counselor; social worker; chaplain; nurse aides; and volunteers.
For more information or referral for services, call (304) 768-8523 and ask for a
member of the Kids Path Program Team. (If the referral requires a physician's order, a team member will contact the
child's attending physician for approval to make an evaluation visit and discuss program options with the parents or
caregivers.)
